Pediatric dental emergencies may range from sudden toothaches to play or sports-related injuries. Here are some steps you can take to help during a typical childhood dental emergency:
If your child's permanent tooth gets knocked out, let's find that tooth. Hold it gently by the top, not the root. Rinse it softly without scrubbing. Place the tooth back in position and have your child bite down on a clean cloth if possible. If that's not an option, keep the tooth moist in milk and reach out to us immediately.
After rinsing your child's mouth with warm water and applying a cold compress to reduce swelling, it's important to gently clean the area around the broken tooth. If you can, find the broken tooth fragment and keep it moist by placing it in a container with milk or saliva. Bring the tooth fragment along with you to our office so our dental team can assess the situation.
Make sure to gently clean the area around the sore tooth. Rinse your child’s mouth with warm salt water and carefully use dental floss to remove any food stuck between their teeth. If the pain persists, please contact us as soon as possible.
An abscess is an infection that needs attention to prevent tissue damage and spread. If you notice a pimple-like swelling on your child's gum, feel free to contact us.
We understand that dental emergencies can happen at any time, so we're here to support our patients even outside of regular office hours. Our protocol for after-hours emergencies involves being on call via text or phone call. When a patient contacts us with an emergency, we'll promptly assess the situation and provide guidance on how to manage the issue at home if appropriate.
For true emergencies such as severe dental trauma or dental infections, we'll make arrangements to see the patient at the office after hours to ensure they receive the care they need promptly and effectively. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities, and we're committed to being there for you whenever you need us.
